Actress Lindsay Lohan, whose struggles with addiction has been well documented and has now completed a 90-day stay at a rehab facility. She says she is now “committed to staying on the road to recovery.” The 27-year-old understands that simply finishing a course of inpatient treatment is not enough to guarantee that she has beaten her demons. Lohan has decided to hire a sober coach, who will be accompanying her on an upcoming trip to Europe and will be living with her in New York for a time. Sober living facilities provide ongoing support to clients who don’t have the same recognition factor as Ms. Lohan.

After Leaving Treatment

Seeking treatment at an inpatient drug and alcohol rehab program is not the end of the journey to sobriety. It is only the beginning step in the process. Addiction is a chronic disease, and men living with it need to accept that they must be vigilant about their recovery. There is no date after which point someone who has been to rehab is pronounced “cured” and can honestly say that he no longer needs the help and support of an Orange County sober living program.

Allowing someone to leave atreatment facility with no set plan in place for follow-up care increases the likelihood of relapse tremendously. A man can learn a lot about his addiction and himself while in the residential treatment facility. In that environment, the schedule of meetings, counseling sessions and group activities runs in a predictable manner. Life outside of the facility will present many situations that a client may not be able to predict or prepare for in advance.

Ongoing Support and Follow-Up

Ongoing support from a sober living facility helps to ease the transition moving from the inpatient treatment center to living independently. For “graduates” of the treatment program, follow-up may eventually include attending ongoing meetings where men can share the events of their lives and get encouragement as they continue their daily journey to stay sober.

Sober living requires a daily commitment to stay away from drugs and alcohol. There will be times when that choice will not be easy, no matter how committed to sobriety an individual is.

Men who commit themselves to sobriety may find the initial stages challenging, but in the long-term they will notice significant improvement in their physical, emotional, and spiritual health, and also their finances.  Though a difficult undertaking that requires radical change in life, sobriety is well worth all the energy individuals invest in it.
