Addiction recovery is, for many, a lifelong process. If you are in the midst of recovery and seeking ways to ensure its success, a relapse recovery may be worth considering. Relapse recovery plans list out ways to help recovering addicts identify and address various triggers that may tempt them into using. By creating a plan to consult when urges strike, addicts will be better equipped to control their actions and even understand how best to regain a foothold if a relapse does occur.
Instructions
1 – Concoct a list of 5+ things that may trigger the urge to use. This may include anything from old friends you used to use with to seeing someone order a beer at your favorite restaurant. By identifying these triggers, you will be better prepared to deal with them if and when they arise.
2 – Jot down ways to combat each trigger. Solutions may vary depending on what works best in your particular situation. Examples might range from looking at pictures of yourself at your “bottom” or placing a focus on positive thoughts of your children.
3 – Write out a list of 5+ friends or family members who you can contact if you’re ever on the verge of relapse. These individuals can range from members of your support group to a sibling; anyone whom you trust, and can talk you through the urges.
4 – Jot down a list of 5+ activities to distract you from the urges. These may include anything from a relaxing bubble bath to a quick jog around the block. Shoot for something that positively impacts your life or well being.
5 – Write out a backup plan in case of relapse. Contacting a therapist and attending 12-step meetings is a great place to start. This can help you understand how to control your situation on a permanent basis.
6 – Keep copies of your plan around at all times. Throw one in your wallet, another in the glove box of your vehicle, and couple additional copies around the house. The better prepared you are to deal with a relapse, the better able you will be to prevent it.
