Continued from Chapter 6 – Part 1
Victor was a really good dad. He gave everything to his son that he could. Roberta was a great mom. She loved her boy very much. Grandpa Fred was wonderful. Nothing was too much for his grandson, Chris. Chris became an addict in his teens. He was addicted to Oxycontin. He would smoke, snort or even once in a while shoot up his crushed pills.
Over the years Victor and Roberta tried to get him to stop. They even tried to detox him on their own. Every once in a while they would even buy him pills, when he told them he was trying to quit and was weaning himself off the drug. Chris was stealing from his parents so they had him go live with Grandpa Fred.
Victor and Roberta called a treatment facility that put them in touch with an interventionist they called. They agreed with all that was being said to them, but they couldn’t go through with the intervention. They rationalized to themselves that somehow Chris is going to change.
Procrastinating Intervention And The Consequences
Another year went by – Chris was worse off than ever. Once again they called the treatment center and interventionist. Grandpa Fred kind of half-heartedly agreed that perhaps the family must intervene on Chris. So they made a decision to go forward, but in a month, not right away.
Their procrastination cost Chris his life. He died in Grandpa Fred’s back bedroom.
Fear took over, all the what-ifs. What about this, what about that? Is Chris going to be angry with us? Will he try to kill himself? He was already killing himself, slowly, yet that’s what was happening. Procrastination set in, that awful thief of time.
Courage In Intervention
Time is not on your side in the world of addiction. There are no tomorrows and there can be no what-ifs. It is only time that separates life and death. Have the courage to change now, and no longer allow the addict in your life play you for a fool.
